DIY Shirts During COVID-19
Updated: Mar 10, 2021
LAUREL CANYON, CA - In times of COVID-19, it can be hard to make money or even stay busy. Two teenage girls have cracked the code and developed a way to be artsy as well as earning money. Co-partners Edith Katcher and Ebba Hickey started MaBigToe in which they manufacture homemade t-shirts and sell them online to an even wider audience in their neighborhood.

"It literally started so randomly, we have nothing to do usually and we're really creative and come up with things very easily." -Edith Katcher
The pair has made it possible to distribute their shirts in different ways. One such way is hand-delivering them safely driving their cars to the customer's house with no contact. Katcher and Hickey make the effort to drive it even themselves. This brings them even closer to their community.
"So we basically just package the t-shirts, put them in a little baggy, and then through the DM' they give us their address and we go to their house and drop it off." -Ebba Hickey
They started this process just out of boredom and a yearn for creativity. With all of the proper materials such as a hot press, cheap blank t-shirts, and a computer accessible, they were able to get their t-shirt manufacturing up and running with ease.
Older kids find engaging in certain activities on a regular basis to be helpful for their mentality. As they approach adulthood, teens are more likely to engage in practices that they would align an adult would engage with such as art or computer programming.
With people scratching their heads as to what to do in terms of the pandemic, Katcher and Hickey are attempting to make their community happy during this bleak time with their artsy shirts. They cannot wait for future opportunities that will further their success as a start-up company. To many, the COVID-19 pandemic was detrimental, but to these two adolescents, it gave them an opening for opportunity.
